HOW IT WORKS

Understanding inflation

Inflation describes a general increase in prices over time. When prices rise, the same amount of money generally buys fewer goods and services than it did previously.

IMPORTANT ASSUMPTIONS

What this estimate assumes

This calculator assumes a constant annual inflation rate compounded once per year. Actual inflation can change from year to year and different products or services can experience different price changes.

How the inflation scenario is calculated

Future cost is calculated by multiplying the current amount by (1 + annual inflation rate)years. The calculator holds the rate constant for the entire period. Purchasing power is shown as the current amount divided by the same growth factor.

Example: 10,000 at an assumed 3% annual rate for 10 years becomes about 13,439 under annual compounding. The estimate is a scenario, not a forecast: actual inflation changes over time and differs across countries, categories and households.
