How this calculator works

The calculator applies an equivalent monthly rate and adds the monthly contribution each month. It is designed to help you understand the relationship between time, contributions and a hypothetical rate of return.

Important assumptions

  • The annual rate is an illustrative assumption, not a forecast.
  • Contributions are assumed to be made monthly.
  • Taxes, fees and changes in return are not included unless explicitly stated.

How the compound-growth estimate works

The calculator applies the annual return as a monthly rate (annual percentage ÷ 12 ÷ 100). Each month, the existing balance earns the assumed monthly return and the entered contribution is then added. The estimate therefore assumes contributions arrive at the end of each month and the same rate applies throughout the selected period.

What the result means: total contributions include the starting amount plus all monthly contributions; estimated growth is the projected balance minus those contributions.

Returns are not guaranteed. The estimate excludes taxes, investment fees, inflation and market volatility, and it does not model withdrawals or changing contribution amounts. Actual investment outcomes can be lower or negative.
